My Diary on Braces

11/20/2013 01:11:00 AM

18/11/2013 was the day I put my braces.

Roughly 2 years ago, my dad insisted on putting braces for me, we even went to find a few specialists in Seremban town. But it turned out even the specialist wasn't confident enough to put braces for me. The reason? I'm not very very sure of it, but as far as i know, whenever I smile, my gums at the upper teeth is visible. It's much more visible when I laugh. And I love to smile and laugh. So it isn't as simple as 'rearranging' my teeth neatly, they'll have to sorta push in my upper teeth which are slightly outward inward and my lower teeth outwards as I dun really have a chin. That's what the adults say, hahaha.

So it struck me one day, the idea of having braces. The reason I didn't want to have it at the first place was because:

1) I can't eat everything I want as freely anymore. ( Main concern )

2) It looks ugly. With my already-ugly-looking-face, it worsens the condition. TT

3) I was afraid of the pain of getting braces. From what I heard from people with braces, they all said the same thing: If you want to be pretty, this is the price you have to pay.

And the reasons why I wanna have braces now:

1) Screw delicious food. Braces will force myself on a diet, I'll get a little thinner before Chinese New Year for sure.

2) It's actually not that bad looking. My close friends who have them doesn't look weird on them. And I realized their smiles are much more prettier than they were before.

3) It'll stop my dad for nagging. Hahaha, joking, I know my dad wants the best for me. =]

With that idea and the courage, I talked to my parents. Of course my dad was very very happy of it. Hahahaa.

The scheduled time for me to put braces was at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

I took the last selca without my braces in the morning on that day.

Before you put your braces, the dentist will put a blue colour thing in between your teeth, they call it 'getah'. Just four sides, not all the teeth. Unfortunately the picture I took was very blur, so I'm not posting it up. ><

This was the last meal before my braces, my lunch for the day:
As I stated in one of the previous posts, I'm not the type who takes photos of food. But since this is something to remember, I sorta hesitate quite a while and took it in the end. ( See how hard it is for me to take pictures of food? )

The food in the picture: 2 slices of fried egg with onion, deep fried fish, rice with a little bit of curry and tomato sauce at the top left of the polystyrene.

Anyways, at roughly 1.45pm, I went out to the dentist'. I was watching Gakuen Alice before going, haha!

The scheduled duration was 3 hours, but due to the other walk-in patients, I have to wait for a while. It's actually good because I had the time to relax and calm myself down. But I think by the time the dentist finished putting braces for me, it was around 5.30-5.45pm!

It was raining during that time. Thunderstorm. TT Luckily it didn't last long. My mom 'tapao' my favourite chao kuey teow for dinner, though there isn't one for me, I ate a few bites from my mom's when I reached home. It was a surprise that I could eat! I heard from a lot of people on their 'feedbacks' for braces. One of my friend spent an hour to finish a bowl of porridge after her braces. Some suffered the pain for a week. And there was this one person I know who went to eat KFC straight after getting her braces done. She has my absolute salute to that.

Now to the FAQs, I figured this will be easier rather than typing a paragraph for it.

1) While having the 'getah', is it painful?

Ans: Well, I actually put the getah twice because the original date for my braces wasn't that day, but due to a lesson in school that I have have have have to attend, it got postponed. So my actual answer, the first time wasn't that painful, it was just irritating, but nice to chew. But on the second time, I don't know why, it hurts a lot. Much much much worse than before. Even eating was a problem to me.

2) Is it painful to put braces?

Ans: Overall, not as painful as I thought it would be I guess. It's actually easier for me to chew than when I had the getah. But for now ( I'm on the 3rd day of having braces ), I can only chew on the right side. My left side is like, I don't know how to describe. Weak, perhaps?

3) What was the most painful thing during the process of getting my braces done?

Ans: Err, for me, like I stated that my case is a little different than everyone else, I have to put screw in it. It's the beginning of the process. It hurts so so much. Ohh gosh, I had tears in my eyes that time. I choked on the water twice too. The doctor even did injection on my gums four times, but seriously, it's not painful. Really. Although I was shocked till death when I saw the size of the syringe, but it's not that painful.

4) What did I eat after my braces?

Ans: A few bites of chao kuey teow! Haahha. My breakfast for the following two days was kon lou mee. Kicap mee I guess. Hahha. Quite impressive ehh? ;D

5) Is it painful when you eat?

Ans: Quite. Depends on what you eat of course.

6) Do you have the pulling sensation from the braces?

Ans: Actually, no. Not at all. I can't feel it. Maybe the dentist forgot to tighten it? Or maybe he just wants to take things slowly. Haha!

7) How much does it cost?

Ans: 7k. But if you were to get your braces done at the government clinic, it's a 0 less than my cost. RM 700 only.

8) Where did I get my braces done?

Ans: I got it done at Dentist Lim's clinic in PD town.

9) How do I feel?

Ans: Err, funny? Hahha, it's just so weird to have a metal disturbing you when you talk and eat.

10) Is it hard to talk?

Ans: Not really. But I can't talk too fast.

11) Is it ugly?

Ans: Nope, not at all. =] It looks like ordinary braces, and that's what I wanted. Take a look!

I chose the colour purple by the way. Does it look nice? =D

Well, I guess that's all for this post. My diary on braces. Ending this post with my selca after braces. =]

How do I look? Comment comment! =D
